Troubleshooting A Stubborn Garage Door

Blog

You're sitting in your car in the driveway and the garage door fails to respond to your remote control. The problem could be as simple as changing batteries in the remote or it may be time to replace the garage door opener. Here are a few ways to track down the problem yourself before you call a garage door specialist to investigate.

Remote Control Problems

Take the remote with you through the house and into the garage. Try the button on the wall of the garage to open the garage door. If the door opens and closes this way, replace the batteries in the remote and try it again. If it still doesn't work, it's time to replace the remote.

Garage Door Problems

If you press the button in the garage and you hear the motor go on but it can't lift the garage door, the door or hardware connected to it may be the problem. Find the long springs running parallel with the ceiling. Check that they are connected to a ceiling bracket at one end and to a pulley and cable at the other. If either spring is not connected this way, the motor won't be able to lift the door and it's time to call the garage door service.

Look at the rollers mounted on both sides of the garage door. They should move freely and be in the metal track that runs alongside of the door and up to the ceiling. If a roller is bent, broken, or jammed in the metal track, the door may not open. Have a service come out and repair any damaged rollers.

Garage Door Opener Problems

If the garage door motor makes no sound when you push the button on the garage wall, press the reset button on the back of the motor and try it again. If it works now, there may have been a brief electrical fluctuation in your house which caused the motor to trip the circuit breaker inside of it. Resetting it may have fixed the problem, but if it happens again soon, have the motor inspected in case it is starting to go bad.

If the motor makes noise when you try to open the door from inside the garage but the door doesn't open, the motor may be bad. If the springs, cables and rollers that are used to open the door appear intact, the motor may be failing and it's time to replace it. You'll need a garage door company to replace the motor for you.
