3 Tips To Help You Declutter Your Garage

Blog

If you're lucky enough to live in a house with a garage, you know what a useful space it can be. You can use your garage to shelter your car from the elements, and it can even become a work space for various projects. Of course, garages are also a fine source of extra storage space. Unfortunately, your garage can get cluttered over time. If your garage is feeling cramped and stuffed full of junk, here are three tips to help you declutter:

1. Get rid of things you don't use.

In order to organize your garage, the first thing you need to do is get rid of things you don't use. If you're like most people, you probably don't even remember what you have stored in your garage. In order to declutter, set aside a weekend to take everything out of your garage. Look at what you have and decide if you still need all of it. You probably don't need clothes that the kids have outgrown and supplies from hobbies you don't do anymore. Secondhand stores are usually happy to receive donations of usable items.

2. Sell your old car.

Your car is a large item that can take up quite a lot of space in your garage. Most families find that they can get along just fine with only one car; as a bonus, you'll save money on both gas and car insurance. If you have a junk car sitting in your garage that you keep meaning to fix up, you might want to consider parting with it. Your car doesn't even have to be in driving condition. Salvage car companies, like U Pull & Pay, will give you money for junk cars. This is a great way to ear a little extra money while you declutter.

3. Invest in a storage unit.

Seasonal items can take up a lot of space in the garage. Holiday decorations and winter clothing are items you only use once a year, and they sit in the garage the rest of the time. It doesn't make sense to get rid of them, since you do use them annually. This is where a storage unit can come in handy. Invest in a self-storage space to store the belongings that you seldom use. Storage units don't have to be expensive. You can rent a storage space that's the exact size you need in order to save money.
